Everybody Say……KWANZAA!!

by Megan Resig on December 5, 2013

‘Tis the season for lots of holiday-themed session plans for myself and the rest of my team!

This Kwanzaa song has become one of my favorite pieces to pull out for some of my larger groups. It’s simple format makes it easy to add lots of fun improvisational elements like group drumming, creative movement, or songwriting.

I also love this song because students have the opportunity to explore different words in Swahili – which can be a great speech and language exercise.

What cool holiday-themed ideas are YOU using in your sessions? I would love to hear in the comments below! Happy session planning! :)

Although this article was targeting art therapy (and play therapy) there are strong parallels that can be made for music therapy as well. Basically it was a criticism of the numerous amounts […]

The Number Game: A Warm Up for Group Drumming

by Megan Resig

I have the privilege of facilitating some AWESOME therapeutic drumming groups as part of my music therapy work. While most of my work in these kinds of situations is more about improvising in the moment, I’ll often engage the group in some sort of specific warm up to get members aware of how their particular […]
